The talk titled “Methodological Issues in Management Research” for the podcast series of IGNOU is designed to summarize the journey of methodological paradigms in an applied domain such as management. The talk highlights the problem areas or issues associated with methodologies used, the dichotomies between major paradigms such as the qualitative and quantitative research and the journey towards mixed method research in management. The talk also highlights importance of longitudinal studies, experimental research designs, relevance of research to practice, theoretical saturation of data and drawing appropriate samples for qualitative studies among others.

Prof. Sumita Mishra is an alumnus of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, where she earned a master’s degree in social work. She is a Fellow from the Management Development Institute, Gurgaon. Besides having worked for organizations like CAPART, UNICEF and Tata Refractories Limited, she also has 13 years of teaching experience. She has published several papers in referred journals such as Journal of Human Values, Management Research Review, Asian Case Research Journal, Decision, Indian Journal of Industrial Relations, Management Review, International Journal of Indian Culture and Business Management etc. and has also presented papers in national and international conferences of repute. Her interests are in the area of research methods in management, qualitative research, organizational culture, group culture, Strategic Human Resource Management, Social Psychology and Organization Design. She coedited a book on Methodological Advances in Management Research published by Emerald.
